    Why RehabWorks?

After struggling with a misalignment issue that had altered my running form and caused pain through my lower back and right hip/leg, I went to RehabWorks for physical therapy. We quickly learned that a lot of these injuries were caused by core and gluteal weakness. After years of focusing on only running, I had no idea where to start. My parents researched sports performance options and the feedback from others was tremendous. Determined to get back on the track with a competitive edge, I knew I had to give it a try.

    Results?

Not only do I run without pain, my form and endurance have improved. I’ve become noticeably stronger all over my body, and I feel so much more powerful pushing through the final mile of my race even as my competitors begin to fade. Not only did Mark help improve my strength, he also boosted my confidence. From the moment I stepped into the gym, the support and encouragement I received was truly incredible. I feel prepared to successfully transition to running at the collegiate level at AU!

    Advice?

Definitely try this program! A lot of athletes want to succeed, but only a few are willing to put in the work that it entails. RehabWorks can help you reach the next level while having fun! There’s not a more positive environment you could put yourself in to reach your goals.

    Thoughts?

I began this program to improve my running but the attention and love that I received really can’t be beat. Mark pushed me to my limits during tough workouts, but he also never failed to check on me before a big race or to stop by to see me while I’m at PT.

    Why RehabWorks?

I was referred to RehabWorks by others who had used them for therapy with successful results. The nurses at the hospital highly recommended them as well. I heard nothing but great feedback about their staff.

    Results?

I had total knee replacement surgery on July 3 and I immediately began my therapy. I attended therapy 3 times per week for 12 weeks. If it wasn’t for John Cooper, Josh Smith & Wes, I don’t know if I would have been able to walk properly without pain. They taught me more about my body than I’ve ever known. They explained how important it was to do my “homework.” Due to hard work & encouragement, I returned back to work one month earlier than expected which was great! I’m having my right knee replaced soon and I’ll choose this awesome team again.

    Advice?

Choose RehabWorks because the team is knowledgeable and they have excellent people skills. They encourage patients to keep pushing through the pain to get results.

    Why RehabWorks?

In April, 2018, I had an accident causing a deep laceration to my left wrist. I had severe damage to most of the tendons, muscle, nerves, and vessels which caused very minimal movement in my wrist and hand. After surgery, my sister recommended to RehabWorks-Valley.

    Results?

My therapist, Lindsay Ellis, and student therapist, Ricki Wilson, patiently worked through a therapy plan to improve my range of motion. Thanks to their care and dedication, my hand and wrist are fully functional!

    Advice?

Definitely choose RehabWorks! They’re amazing and their team will do anything in their power to get you to where you need to be. Follow all of their directions and be persistent about doing your at-home exercises! Whatever your therapy goal might be, remember, patience is key, never give up, and work hard to reach your goal.

    Why RehabWorks?

After I completed my freshmen year at AU, I suffered a spinal cord injury which caused paralysis from the waist down. I called numerous physical therapy offices in the community to continue my recovery journey when I returned to AU. I was referred to Tina Hooks because of her out-of-the box thinking and her experience with neuro-physical therapy. Pool therapy with Allen Graham was also suggested as part of my therapy plan.

    Results?

When I started working with Tina and Allen in January 2017, I primarily used a wheelchair and a walker for short distances. Since then, I’ve transitioned from walker to forearm crutches to canes and I’m progressing toward unassisted walking! The results are truly amazing. I’ve made remarkable improvements in my gait pattern, muscle coordination, balance and overall strength. Before pool therapy, I wasn’t very comfortable in the water even though I’ve loved being in water all of my life. Exercising in the pool is invaluable because there is less of a burden from gravity. I’ve regained confidence, increased swimming endurance and improved in all of the exercises. I always look forward to mastering the next goal. I was fortunate enough to test my swimming skills on a snorkeling trip in Thailand. I will forever cherish this accomplishment.

    Advice?

RehabWorks is the best place for any type of injury. Their expertise has benefitted so many people, including me, in more ways than just physically. Hard work is a major key when it comes to physical recovery. RehabWorks’ staff will be there to reciprocate all the effort you’re willing to contribute and the results from this partnership are astonishing.

    Insights?

My growing knowledge of muscle health and locomotion has influenced me physically and academically. As a pre-nursing major with a minor in dance, I’m continuously applying this knowledge to every aspect of my life.

    Why RehabWorks?

After taking a year off from college to battle leukemia, I reenrolled at AU and I was referred to RehabWorks by a good family friend who lives in Auburn. I had extensive nerve damage in both of my legs from my treatments that caused the use of leg braces and crutch or cane to help me walk. After spending a few months with my physical therapist, Abby Nielson, I transitioned to the Sports Performance program with Mark Fuller.

    Results?

I’ve been training with Mark twice a week for 6 months. With the help of my RehabWorks team, I’ve regained a significant amount of strength back. I walk completely without a cane and can even partially walk without the use of the leg braces. I’m much more confident in my abilities to get around. I even have some movement back in parts of my ankles and toes! I owe so much to Abby, Mark and everyone else at RehabWorks Auburn who have worked tirelessly to help me get back to my “normal” self.

    Advice?

If you have any type of physical therapy or sports performance needs, you should definitely choose RehabWorks. Their team is incredibly professional, encouraging and committed to helping their patients. They always have your best interest in mind. They generally care about you as a person and they’re dedicated to helping you improve so you can reach your goals.

    Why RehabWorks Sports Performance?

I’ve had problems with stability in my knees for over a year. My doctor referred me to Abby Nielson for physical therapy. Abby suggested that I continue to strengthen my quads by working with Angie Lincoln-Velez in the Sports Performance program.

How long have you been in the program?

    Approximately 3 months.

    Results?

Angie has helped me build muscle around my knees and I feel so much better. The exercises have expanded my range of motion and I’m still getting stronger!

    Advice?

I definitely recommend RehabWorks and the Sports Performance program! The trainers are great. They really care about their clients and help them grow stronger.

    Results?

I have increased my strength and speed as well as other improvements to my overall game. I really see the results on the baseball field.

    Advice?

    Why RehabWorks?

In May 2017, I had a stroke which caused a significant facial droop on my right side. My speech was also damaged. Dr. Eric Hemberg and the staff at EAMC recommended speech therapy.

    Results?

My facial droop has greatly improved. I can now speak much clearer and can be understood by most people. My speech therapist, Emily Thompson, was very competent, helpful, and professional.

    Advice?

Enroll in therapy as quickly as possible and do your home therapy as instructed.

Insights from speech therapist, Emily Thompson:

I’m so proud of Monroe and his dedication. He has two notebooks full of research, homework and notes that I gave him. He hasn’t missed a scheduled treatment session since we’ve been working together twice a week for 4 months.

    Why RehabWorks?

I work for EAMC and I’ve used RehabWorks for rehab after multiple surgeries. Dr. Horak suggested that I try dry needling with Abby.

    Results?

Amazing results! I’ve loved the results from each physical therapist that I’ve worked with. I’ve lived with tremendous pain for over six years but I rarely have pain now. I’ve had two cervical fusions (C3- T1) and my pain was tremendous, 24/7.

I’ve tried trigger point injections, epidurals, spinal block and botox but nothing seemed to help. I was very hesitant about trying dry needling and I thought that I would always live with pain.

After just two sessions of dry needling, I felt amazing and had such a positive outlook that I didn't have to live with constant pain any more. I left with a huge smile on my face and said, "I will be a poster girl for dry needling!" I didn't think that Steve Kisor really had taken it to heart and would actually put me on a poster! LOL!

    Advice?

RehabWorks has a reputation of making sure that ALL of their patients are provided with the care they need as well as lead them to a speedy recovery.

  • Minna Waites

    Minna Waites
    About Me
    • Shorter, AL
    • 17 months old
    Minna's Story

Minna was born seven weeks premature with a congenital heart defect called Total Anomalous Venous Pulmonary Return (TAPVR). This is a rare congenital malformation in which all four pulmonary veins do not connect normally to the left atrium. Instead, the four pulmonary veins drain abnormally to the right atrium (right upper chamber) by way of an abnormal (anomalous) connection.

When Minna was five weeks old, she went into cardiac arrest for nine minutes causing her heart to stop. Oxygen to her brain was cut off which caused a grade 2 stroke on the right side of her brain. The stroke affected the learning center which we were told would cause some delays. It also caused Minna to have seizures, hypothyroidism, acute kidney injury, cortisol deficiency, and a nystagmus in both eyes.

    Why RehabWorks?

We chose RehabWorks after being referred by a physical therapist at UAB’s Newborn Follow Up Clinic. Minna was previously using early intervention and receiving occupational therapy. We immediately knew RehabWorks was the place for us once we met with Kelly, our physical therapist; Elisa, our occupational therapist and Mary Ann, our speech therapist. They’ve become like family and have made a huge difference in Minna’s life. She is like a new child - socially and physically.

    Results?

When Minna started with RehabWorks, she was 8 months old and she was unable to do anything other than lay on her back and wiggle around. She was very delayed and had an aversion to people. She was unable to eat by mouth and unable to talk. Minna is now seventeen months old and she’s almost completely caught! She can eat by mouth and is learning to talk. Our therapists took a unique approach by considering her past and customized therapy to fit her needs. They also involved family and created an emotionally-safe environment where she was not threatened. All of this made a vast difference which allowed her to be at ease and to learn successfully. In less than a year, Minna has become comfortable with her therapists and has been able to overcome her delays while steadily improving and catching up.

    Advice?

I recommend taking time to get to know the team to ensure that you share the same goals. Even if you don’t feel that they’re the right people for the job, you can have peace of mind knowing that they will direct you in the right direction. We have tried other rehabilitative services and this was the first group to take the time to personalize therapy to fit my daughter’s needs. I feel that has made a significant impact on her progress and who she is today.

    Why RehabWorks?

In November, 2015, I lost my leg due to a blood clot. EAMC referred me to RehabWorks. Ben with Alabama Limb Orthopedics Specialist in Opelika fitted me for my prosthetic leg. He said that Tina Hooks was the best physical therapist for amputees. I started therapy in February, 2016 and I finished in January 2017.

    Results?

I’ve had fantastic results! I can walk so much better! I was afraid I would never be able to walk again. With Tina’s help, I’m doing things that I thought I never would be able to do again. Tina taught me how to use my prosthetic leg and how to strengthen my leg and hip muscles. I learned how important it is to consistently lift my leg up and continue to strengthen it.

    Advice?

Do whatever your therapist tells you to do. Have a good attitude. A bad attitude produces bad results. Do your home exercises and you’ll continue to improve. Focus on the things you can do. Believe in yourself. You’re only limited by your own thoughts!

    Insights?

I think the world of Tina. She made my therapy simple. She knows how to push you to the point you need to be but she doesn’t push too much that you’re uncomfortable.

    Why RehabWorks?

RehabWorks was one of the physical therapy options suggested by the Neck and Pain Center. I was having pain in my neck and weakness in my leg. I needed a spinal fusion. I did 4 weeks of pre-operative physical therapy to strengthen my neck and leg. After my surgery, I returned to RehabWorks for 12 weeks physical therapy.

    Results?

When I started therapy, I was in a neck brace and had significant weakness in my leg. I now have full motion and can easily move my neck with less pain. My legs are also strengthened.

    Advice?

Listen to your therapist and be consistent about doing exercises at home.

    Insights?

My therapist, Beth Kisor, was very encouraging and taught me the right exercises which I continued at home. The RehabWorks staff made me feel welcome. They’re great to work with.

    Thoughts!

RehabWorks is the place to come for therapy. They have great therapists and I would recommend RehabWorks to anyone who needs therapy.

    Why RehabWorks?

I had 3 strokes between June-July 2016. Dr. Fagan recommended RehabWorks after the 1st stroke which affected my speech. After the 3rd stroke, I had a blood clot and brain bleed on left side that affected memory, ability to speak and read. It required surgery at UAB. After 2 1/2 weeks in neurological intensive care, I was transferred to Regional Rehabilitation Hospital in Phenix City, AL for 2 1/2 weeks for recovery and rehab. After discharge, Regional Rehab agreed that I should continue my rehab at RehabWorks since I already knew and liked my therapist. It's also very convenient to our home.

    Results?

I began rehab twice a week starting in September, 2016. I still go to therapy once a week. My balance came back pretty quickly. My speech and memory are still improving.

    Advice?

Don’t stop trying. Just keep going. It’s hard to stay positive sometimes but you have to find the little things to hold on to since progress can be slow.

    Insights?

My therapist, Emily Thompson, is great! I’ve had a very positive experience with the whole office. They’re all encouraging and nice. They help keep my spirits up!

    Why RehabWorks?

I had back surgery to remove a tumor wrapped around my spinal cord that was preventing me from walking properly. The surgery left me with a 7-inch incision and 24 staples. Due to a previous back surgery, I carried my right shoulder about one inch lower than my left. Both issues caused me to have problems with my balance.

I began my rehab at home. Once the staples were removed, I was able to step up my rehab with Tina Hooks at RehabWorks -Opelika

    Results?

Tina taught me exercises which strengthened my shoulders and they’re now even. She also taught me exercises for my spine which resulted in a straight spine. I’m walking without a cane, playing golf and my balance is great.

    Advice?

Continue to do the exercises they give you until you are completely healed.

    Insights?

The entire staff at RehabWorks is very professional and they really know what they’re doing.

I went to rehab in Birmingham after my first back surgery and for a bad ankle sprain. Those therapists were good but they don’t compare to the treatment, care and concern shown me by the RehabWorks team.

    Thoughts!

We are very fortunate to have such skilled and compassionate care in Auburn/Opelika area.

    Results?

In Jan, 2013, I was diagnosed with stage 3C breast cancer. After surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, I had neuropathy and balance problems that were restricting my lifestyle and self confidence. After a bad scare on the football stadium steps, I sought help. Tina Hooks was so compassionate and taught me exercises that would benefit me the most. She has a gift for keeping you encouraged that you can succeed and helping you reach your goals. My improvement was quite dramatic and I have continued my therapy on my own. My therapy has been lasting and life changing.

    Advice?

Trust your therapist, really pay attention and work hard. Continue your therapy on your own when your sessions are over for long term relief.

    Results?

My knee has greatly improved. My therapist, Christie Jones, is excellent. She’s very thorough and took me through the entire improvement process.

    Advice?

Follow the instructions they give you and continue your therapy at home so you will have success. Therapy works!

Several years ago, I had a completely detached rotator cuff. Dr. Bob McAlindon suggested I try RehabWorks instead of surgery. I had a successful recovery and I didn’t have surgery. When I needed a complete knee replacement this June, I knew I wanted to use RehabWorks again.

    Results?

My therapist, Christie Jones, was incredible! She pushed me as far as I could go. If it ever got too painful, she worked with me to try something else. She is so sweet and patient. My knee has greatly improved. I walk 1.5 miles and stretch every day without pain!

    Advice?

You have to be determined to do the best you can with therapy. It can be painful and uncomfortable but it gets easier with time. You must continue your therapy exercises at home every day if you’re going to have a successful recovery.

    Insights?

The positive atmosphere in the office makes therapy such a pleasant experience. I never dreamed that I would look forward to my therapy appointments but I did! I actually miss going to therapy because I enjoyed all of the employees so much!

Over the past several years, I've had 3 major surgeries with Dr. Patrick Martin. I tore all of the tendons in my shoulder and I've had 2 knee replacements (2012 & 2016).

    Results?

After each surgery, I started with home health therapy. After a few weeks, I started therapy at RehabWorks because they really know how to push you. They know how far you need to go and how to get you to that point. They also have great equipment. I’ve regained full use of my shoulder and both knees.

    Advice?

Before my last knee surgery, I did therapy at home to strengthen my knee and I think that really helped my recovery process. Do what your therapists tell you to do and make sure you complete your exercises at home too.

    Insights?

I’ve recommended RehabWorks to several of my friends. I'm impressed with everyone in the office. They're very professional. I've worked with many of the therapists but I've worked more closely with Leslie Nicholas and John Cooper who have been excellent!

    Why RehabWorks?

During our spring football game, I suffered tears in my ACL, MCL & PCL. I chose RehabWorks because of its location and its great reputation around the area.

    Results?

I started rehabbing my knee two days after my surgery. My results have been awesome. In a very short period of time, I regained the use of my quadriceps muscles and quickly redeveloped the strength in my leg and knee. This program has allowed me to recover at a fast pace and that means I get to return to the field sooner.

    Advice?

Follow the guidance of the physical therapists. They have your best interest and health in mind. They are really great people.

    Insights?

I greatly appreciate the time that Hayley Collier, Keena Edwards and Whitney Laney have spent with me trying to get my knee ready to play again. It’s been a difficult process but RehabWorks and my doctor have helped me so much. I’ve grown close to all of my therapists, especially Steve Kisor and Jeff Cotten. Ryan was born premature at 25 weeks. We spent 19 months at UAB & Children's Hospital due to a variety of infections and surgeries for a trach and g-tube. We were referred to RehabWorks by Dr. Brooke Williams of the Pediatric Clinic.

    Results?

His progress has been remarkable. He went from not letting anyone touch his mouth at all to letting us feed him baby food and yogurt 2-3 times a day. He couldn’t sit up on his own but he’s steadily made progress. He’s pulling to stand without any assistance! His grip has gotten stronger. He’s much less sensitive and more accepting of letting people help him. His communication and sensory skills are improving drastically.

    Advice?

If you don’t immediately see improvements during therapy, don’t give up! You have to let the process work itself out. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be an advocate for your child.

    Insights?

Kelly Shaw (PT), Ashley Spurlin (ST) and Anna McDill (OT) are amazing and caring therapists who have become like family! They look at the whole child and don’t focus just on their own specific discipline.

I was born with Spina Bifida and developed Diabetes later in life. I walked for 65 years before neuropathy set in and removed all feelings in my legs. Dr. Meadows and Dr. Bob McAlindon recommended that I work with RehabWorks to strengthen my legs.

I was new to the area and I needed a place to push me but also therapists who would understand the complexity of my knee problems. I’ve had six knee surgeries for osteonecrosis including a meniscus repair, a meniscus repair and scope, microfractures of the femur bone, a bone graft, a bone graft plus stem cells and an osteoallograft. I’ve also had a left labrum shoulder repair. I was told to go to RehabWorks by the AU Equestrian team’s athletic trainer who is a friend of mine.

I’ve had several surgeries since working with RehabWorks. Each surgery has set me back but Abby and Jeff have worked extremely hard to get me back into shape. Abby also works along side my doctor and therapist in Atlanta. She takes the time to go above and beyond.

    Advice?

You’ll not regret coming to RehabWorks. Everyone treats you like family and goes the extra mile.

    Insights?

I really appreciate the time that Abby and Jeff have invested in me. I’ve had a long journey and they’ve been by my side every step of the way. They’re not only my therapists, they’re my friends.

Five years ago, Charles fell and hit the back of his head and had bleeding on his brain. He was in a coma for about two weeks. He had to learn to walk and talk again. During his stay at a rehab center, he fell and broke his hip which resulted in multiple surgeries and 90 days in the hospital. Once he finally came home, he did physical therapy with RehabWorks Valley and he improved greatly. About one year ago, Charles was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and Dementia. Dr. Mona Bakshi referred him to RehabWorks Valley.

    Results?

During these past two months of therapy, his balance has improved significantly. He can now get in and out of bed by himself and he can use the bathroom on his own. He can walk further, stand longer and get in and out of cars more easily. He even went back to church with me for Mother’s Day. I never dreamed he would do so well! His physical therapist, Julia Krahm, is such a blessing! She’s been an excellent motivator and she gets him to do things that I can’t! He loves to go to therapy.

Insights from Julia Krahm, PT, DPT:

Since Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition which affects balance and walking, it's exceptional that he’s improving! I’m so proud of his determination and hard work!

    Why RehabWorks?

I suffered a back injury in 2013 while competing with USA Team Handball. I tried different therapists and techniques upon my return home and things just didn’t seem like they'd improve. It took a toll on me physically and emotionally and I began to lose hope that I’d be 100% again. A teammate told me about her great therapist at RehabWorks of Auburn. I decided to give them a call and I was paired with physical therapist, Christie Jones.

    Results?

In a short time, my pain improved and I became hopeful again. Eventually, I was back to competing. However, five months later, I suffered a torn meniscus and had chondroplasty done to my left knee. I've worked with Steve Kisor and Jeff Cotten with no doubts that I will be back to 100% -- better than I was before. I feel stronger and I gain confidence with every visit. Since working with the RehabWorks team, I’ve increased strength and range of motion that I wasn’t sure was possible and my pain is almost nonexistent. I was also diagnosed with anxiety and RehabWorks is a safe haven for me. They exude positivity and caring that help people more than they realize.

    Advice?

They care about their patients, they’ll push you to do better and they’ll go above and beyond for you. They may even feed you!

    Insights?

While I've worked with Christie, Steve and Jeff more directly, every therapist, aide, and front desk associate has played a role in my recovery. RehabWorks is like my second home and these people are my friends for life.

I’ve had ongoing pain in my inner foot area which hurts worse when I play volleyball or run. Dr. Bob McAlindon discovered that I have an extra navicular bone in my foot. My feet are also flat and extremely tight. Instead of surgery, he suggested physical therapy at RehabWorks. We’ve heard great things about RehabWorks from friends as well.

My physical therapist, Abby Nielson, made my feet stronger and helped reduce the pain significantly. She worked with me through specific exercises that fit my needs. Abby is the best! She takes time with me and explains the problem, the treatment and the solution in a way that my parents and I can understand.

    Why RehabWorks?

In 2000, I suffered a double compound fracture of my left ankle. Dr. Bob McAlindon performed the initial surgery and recommended rehab with physical therapist, Steve Kisor. In 2015, I had total ankle replacement surgery by Dr. Leland McCluskey in Columbus, GA. This is a very rare surgery and requires specialized rehabilitation. Dr. Bob once again suggested Steve and his staff. My physical therapist, Abby Nielson, was aware, informed and prepared for MY unique situation. Abby had a complete understanding of our rehab goals and taught me exercises to do at home. Abby is caring, competent and dedicated to helping others. I could not be more pleased.

    Results?

Abby set a goal to have me dismissed from the boot in three weeks which was in time for my next appointment with Dr. McCluskey. Goal accomplished! After five weeks of rehab, I was walking better than I had in 15 years – PAIN FREE! After years of a swollen ankle every single day, I now have a normal, healthy-looking foot and ankle. Amazing! It doesn’t get much better than walking without a limp and with zero pain. I’m indebted to so many competent and dedicated professionals.

    Advice?

I highly recommend RehabWorks! It's a very busy, friendly and professional atmosphere. Appointments at a specific time are honored. There is no doubt what RehabWorks has meant to my progress and the overall future outlook for this “walking tall” at 5’7” Senior Citizen!! Can you pick up marbles with your toes? I can – thanks to Abby!

When you have surgery and multiple months of rehab, there are two very important people in your life. One is your day-to-day caregiver and my wife, Connie, was superb. The other is your rehab professional. I have deep respect and admiration for Abby. Lucky me!

I chose RehabWorks because my primary care physician, Dr. Cason, at Auburn University Medical Center recommended them to me.

In January, 2015, I sought treatment for my left shoulder which had been frozen for 14 years. I wanted to restore range of motion and reduce pain. My physical therapist, Abby Neilson, worked with my left shoulder for several weeks. She created “homework” physical therapy and recommended several accommodations/modifications for my limited range of motion. It was apparent that some type of surgery was necessary, but I wasn’t ready for shoulder replacement.

A co-volunteer at Church of the Highlands nursery told me about her positive and encouraging experience at The Orthopaedic Clinic. Dr. Trent Wilson successfully performed the CAM (comprehensive arthroscopic manipulation) and removed bone spurs.

By September, 2015, I was post-surgery & doing physical therapy again with Abby. I will always remember Abby’s kindness! She pushed me but she knew when I had reached my pain threshold. Now, I can lift BOTH arms in celebration. Osteoarthritis may require a future shoulder replacement but not TODAY!

I firmly believe that the caring support & resulting friendships helped make my rehabilitation a success! The “open concept” at RehabWorks allows patients to interact with other patients. This support network is the extended “Auburn Family” and I believe it was AS IMPORTANT as the physical care I received.

A “rehab friend” invited me to join her Church of the Highlands small group this semester! Each week, she asks about my shoulder and I get an update on her new knees. We share our positive experiences and we recommend Abby & Steve to others!

    Why RehabWorks?

I taught Steve and Beth Kisor's son at AEEC. When I needed therapy, I knew who I wanted to use! I’ve had two shoulder injuries and a sprained ankle. When I had my double knee replacement in August, 2015, I was already very comfortable with Steve and Jeff Cotten so I was confident that they would help me fully recover once again.

    Results?

George and I have square danced together for over 30 years. I had lost some of my balance and endurance as well as started having pain. I chose to have a double knee replacement so that I could return to square dancing again. With hard work and help from Steve and Jeff, I was able to dance again within two months after surgery! I’m still improving as I continue to do my home therapy. I use exercises they taught me when I go to the gym so I can continue to build muscle strength, increase flexibility and stamina.

What advice do you have for anyone considering therapy with RehabWorks?

I highly recommend RehabWorks! Their whole staff is warm, friendly and knowledgeable. It's a very comfortable atmosphere. I enjoyed making new friends with other clients while we did therapy together.

I broke my right tibia and fibula (Pilon fracture) and my pelvis. I also had a partial tear in my right shoulder. I wasn’t able to walk or put weight on my leg for several months so I had to use crutches. My younger son used RehabWorks after his surgeries. He had good things to say about Jeff and the staff.

    Results?

Jeff, Christie and other staff worked with my doctor in Birmingham to make sure I received the appropriate therapy. They helped me stay flexible, designed exercises to do at home and encouraged me. I was also prescribed aquatic therapy sessions with Allen which we did at the HealthPlus Fitness Center pool. These sessions were great because I could “walk” without crutches and do other exercises that I couldn’t do outside of the pool. They also did periodic measurements to document and show my progress. The therapy and exercises helped me regain my strength and balance.

    Advice?

Even though the reason for being there is not fun and can be painful, the staff is relaxed and fun. The banter, running jokes, other patients and students make the time go by quickly. You can even look forward to going to therapy! Do the exercises they tell you to do and you will make progress!

My husband and I retired in Auburn 11 years ago with plans to stay active and enjoy doing whatever we possibly wanted to do. We both had careers in management so we looked forward to de-stressing and enjoying our grandchildren during the “sunset stages of life!” Little did I know that my early retirement would include two frozen shoulders, a torn labrum and buttocks pain.

    Results?

RehabWorks has been there for me several times over the past nine years. The physical therapy I’ve received (and endured!) from my buddies, Jeff Cotten and Steve Kisor, has been the ticket to my road to recovery. When you spend two to three sessions a week in therapy, you learn how to keep your body moving correctly and you receive special care that positively affects you mentally and emotionally.

    Advice?

At first, I wasn't so sure about dealing with my pain in the open environment but I quickly learned it's good to be in the company of others while “suffering!” I enjoyed the camaraderie of others with similar issues and it helps to take your eyes off of yourself while being worked on! When I hear others complain of their ailments and question whether or not to do therapy, I tell them that the best physical therapists in town are the “Steve and Jeff team!” I’m forever grateful for their expertise and patience.

Their expertise is well-known around town. Their staff is passionate about the people they rehabilitate, and they get results.

    Results?

My therapist, Abby Nielson, was amazing! She designed specific exercises to improve my ankle pain. I had never done dry needling before but I had full confidence in her recommendation to try dry needling. Her expertise had already proven to me that dry needling is a safe and effective method for pain relief -- beyond the limits of a TENS unit or ultrasound. After just one session of dry needling on my Achilles, the swelling in my ankle went away. I couldn’t have asked for better results to get me back running again. I would recommend dry needling to anybody who has lingering joint pains.

    Advice?

If you have an injury, I suggest you try RehabWorks first! You will love their staff. They always find a solution to eliminate pain from sports injuries, surgery scar tissue, and even joint pain issues.

    Thoughts?

Everybody at RehabWorks gives 110% toward making sure their clients are as pain free as possible. I can't think of another place that will get the same results as they do.

We chose RehabWorks several years ago because Kelly Shaw was the only physical therapist we met that was willing to work to improve Aidan’s condition instead of just passively treating the symptoms. I asked Kelly how we could improve on Aidan’s speed because he was concerned that he ran slowly. Kelly recommended that we work with a running coach and she suggested Lesley Binning with RehabWorks’ Sports Performance program.

    Results?

When Aidan was 18 months old, a doctor told us he would never run or never be able to play sports. He also said he would need to wear ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) or foot drop braces in order to walk. After years of work with Kelly, Aidan participates in 5k races and he’s a black belt in karate! He has also participated in soccer and wrestling camps. Since we’ve been working with Lesley, Aidan’s running form and speed has improved tremendously

    Thoughts?

We could not ask for two finer people to work with Aidan. Kelly has gone above and beyond the call of duty for us as long as we can remember. Even though we’ve only known Lesley for a few months, she’s been inspiring and positive.

Our experiences with RehabWorks have been awesome! We can’t say enough great things about Kelly and Lesley! We recommend RehabWorks to anyone looking for therapy or sports enhancement.

    Why RehabWorks?

We’ve tried eight different doctors and pain specialists over the past two years. Only one doctor suggested physical therapy. We tried another rehab facility but we didn’t get results. A neighbor referred us to RehabWorks. He said “they will twist you like a pretzel but when they’re finished, your muscles will be stretched out without any pain!” Ha!

    Results?

After Scott finished with my husband on the third visit, he was finally pain-free at night. He could sleep six or seven hours before getting up to sit for the rest of the night in his recliner. He’s doing his general work around the house without help -- as he was doing before. He even just finished two metal gates that he built for our garden in 100 degree heat! If he stumbles and falls down, I don't have to call a neighbor to help him get up because he can get off the floor by himself again. The exercises are great for people of all ages. I even do some of the exercises myself and I’ve become stronger too! We’re “proof in the pudding!”

    Advice?

Go for it! You have nothing to lose! If you follow their instructions, you will get your old life style back but without the pain and with an added bounce in your step. You’re responsible for your life! Your doctor is a consultant so you have the right to tell your doctor to prescribe physical therapy.

Within 10 minutes of visiting his pediatrician, Ayan was sent to Children’s Hospital by ambulance. After a series of spinal taps, CT scans, and MRIs over two days, he was finally diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). Ayan stayed in Children’s Hospital for 3 weeks and started therapy at RehabWorks as soon as he returned home.

Ayan: I was in a wheelchair before. Now, I can run and ride a bike! When I started therapy, my grip strength was 16 pounds per square inch and now it’s 90!

Before my surgery, my orthopedist gave me dates that I could expect to return to work, weight training and Hapkido. I beat all of those dates by at least one month each.

    My Story

I began physical therapy with Abby in April, 2014, after surgery on my right femur/hip. My rehab went well! I was quickly walking unassisted and with very few problems except for an unstable right knee. My patella was dislocated to the side of my knee. After trying some taping procedures, I carried on until I couldn’t go any further due to the instability of my knee. I talked with my surgeon, Dr. Morrell, about concerns of falling & possibly injuring my right hip & upper right leg beyond repair. In June, 2014, I had my right knee replaced as well as re-constructive surgery to ensure my patella would stay in place. My goals were slow to advance because of the grafts & scar tissue, but the fine professional therapists at RehabWorks did everything possible to ensure I would regain the best possible mobility. There were days of triumph & days when it didn't go so well but neither of us gave up! On October 30, 2014, I attended my last rehab session. It has indeed been bittersweet because the encouragement, professionalism & care plan was excellent. I give them the credit today for the mobility regained by encouraging & pushing me in every session to do the best I could!

    Results?

I started the AU football season with a walker/seat but I quickly progressed to using a cane. By the 4th game, I used the handicapped shuttle but walked into the stadium! By the last game, I even walked back to scholarship parking alone!

I chose RehabWorks to learn how to walk with my new prosthetic leg. I also strengthened my left leg in preparation for a total knee replacement surgery which was about 6 months after the amputation. Remarkably, my left leg was my weak point when walking following my amputation.

    Why RehabWorks?

Amy: Malone suffered a traumatic brain injury while playing high school basketball in a freak accident. He lost the majority of his memory and had some motor challenges. They worked with him on every aspect of recovery and really made him feel a part of the RehabWorks team. I had been a patient at RehabWorks a few years before Malone’s accident so I knew they would be thorough and caring in our very unknown and challenging situation.

Malone: My mother’s choice of RehabWorks for my rehabilitation was a terrific decision. We would choose RehabWorks again, if needed.

    Results?

Amy: They were incredibly compassionate with me and helped me understand what he was dealing with so that I could be a part of his recovery.

Malone: Therapy helped me recover from a serious brain injury. I had to re-learn the alphabet and the months of the year. After four years since my injury, I now have a 3.0 grade point average! If that doesn’t speak to the miracles that God can do through the beauty of therapy, I don’t know what else would.

My therapy was rigorous and rough because of the amount of physical and emotional pain I endured. I’m now better than ever. I still have slight memory issues and motor malfunctions but to be where I am today is all due to the wonderful people at RehabWorks.

    Advice?

Amy: Be honest with your therapists and talk to them not only about how you’re doing but what you’re feeling.

Malone: The entire RehabWorks team is incredibly genuine. They care about you as a person just as much as they do about your recovery. Everyone knew my name and asked me how I was doing every session. It was an enjoyable experience and I would recommend it to anyone.

Malone: I told all of my wonderful therapists that I would give them a “shout out” when I got back on the court. I’m BACK -- thanks to all of my therapists and the wonders they performed. Thanks to each and every one of you! I’ll never forget what you’ve done for me! God Bless!

    Why RehabWorks?

In 2007, I was injured while training. My coach had a good relationship with physical therapist, Steve Kisor, and he suggested I work with him. It's the only place I would go for rehab.

    My Story

During the finals in the 2012 Olympic Games, I completely ruptured my patela tendon on my right knee! It was extremely painful. I was devastated because I was in the best shape of my life! I just wanted to finish the competition but I couldn't even move my right leg. I had immediate surgery to reconstruct my patella tendon! I went from being a "super human" to being bed ridden for a couple months! It was not fun! Even though I was in a lot of pain, I couldn't wait to start my rehab with Steve and the RehabWorks team. I knew they would do their best to get me back in top form. The rehab process took about 1 year and 5 months. I went from crutches to walking with a brace to learning how to walk without a brace to finally running again! The program definitely improved my flexibility and overall strength. I also gained a lot of confidence and mental strength.

    Results?

RehabWorks definitely exceeded my expectations because I've regained muscle strength in my right quad and hamstring! I am running again and even jumping competitively. In April, 2015, I did the triple jump for the 1st time since the 2012 Olympics and I won!

    Advice?

Do it and don't hesitate! RehabWorks becomes your family and they really care. No matter how much pain you have, they will always find a way to put a smile on your face! They're truly blessed and anointed!

If you've ever thought about giving up, DON'T! If I can do this, you can too! Anything is possible as long as you have faith and believe in yourself!

    Thoughts?

I thank God for Steve Kisor and the whole RehabWorks team for everything they've done for me! They gave me another opportunity to follow my goals and dreams again!

    Why RehabWorks?

RehabWorks was recommended by Skylar's pediatrician after her diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy. She has bonded with all of the therapists so much that we couldn't imagine going anywhere else. Therapist Kelly Shaw and Skylar have developed a very special bond over the years. She has been working with her since she was one. Skylar looks forward to therapy every week.

    Results?

The years of therapy she has received, along with a couple of surgeries along the way, have allowed Skylar to walk independently. This is something we weren't sure would have been possible before.

    Advice?

We highly recommend RehabWorks! From the office personnel to all of the therapists, we couldn't think of a better group of people. Not only are they great at their jobs, they genuinely care about their patients.
